- Container loại nhỏ: Trọng lượng dưới 5 tấn và dung tích dưới 3m3
- Container loại trung bình: Trọng lượng 5 – 8 tấn và dung tích nhỏ hơn 10m3 .
- Container loại lớn: Trọng lượng hơn 10 tấn và dung tích hơn 10m3.

Container được đóng bằng loại vật liệu nào thì gọi tên vật liệu đó cho container: container thép, container nhôm, container gỗ dán, container nhựa tổng hợp …
